Rajni was born in Karachi (Pakistan) in 1940 and grew up in Lahore. Her father was an accountant general and after the India-Pakistan partition, the family moved to Delhi where she completed her schooling and enrolled in Miranda House, a prestigious college in Delhi, for higher studies. However, she had to discontinue her studies after getting married at the age of 17 to Dharamvir of Ludhiana, Punjab, who was managing his 100-year-old family business of trading in food grains, oil, and fertilizers. The couple was blessed with three sons. Rajni was passionate about cooking and also loved to bake breads and biscuits along with making ice creams. She regularly cooked and served ice creams, cakes, and cookies at kitty parties and family gatherings. Once her children were old enough to join boarding school, she decided to pursue her passion and took up a baking course at Punjab University..
